Album Notes

Between Miltown & Ennistymon is the title of the first CD from Singer/Songwriter Micheál Marrinan. The title track, a ballad which Micheál composed in recent years, pinpoints the area where he spent much of his younger days in a remote and beautiful corner of Ennistymon Parish, Co. Clare. Micheál has been well known for many years not just for his humorous songs like “The Ballad of Binder Twine” and “The Nightclub” but also for ballads on such serious subjects as emigration and blanket afforestation.

Micheál has won many awards for his compositions in both English and Irish and his songs and poems have been published in numerous periodicals and magazines. In this CD the accompaniment and production is by Garry O Briain although there are eight tracks without accompaniment which will appeal to the more traditional listener. There is also a song called “Homesick for New York” which is very different in style from Micheál’s other songs. As usual though, Micheál finds a unique angle to deal with his subject and with the delightful accompaniment of Garry O’Briain one feels this may well have potential among a wider audience.

There are three songs as Gaeilge, one his own composition and two from Co. Waterford where he has lived for the past thirty years. The only track in English not his own is “The Song of the Hurl” from the repertoire of the late Johnny Crowe, a fine singer from Inagh Parish.

The sleeve notes include the words of all twelve tracks as well as comments from the Wexford song guru Paddy Berry and Séamus MacMathúna formerly of Cooraclare. Several of Micheál’s songs have already entered the tradition and are regularly sung at various gatherings around the country. This is a unique CD which will touch an emotional chord bringing laughter and tears in equal measure…and will give the best of entertainment to all song collectors.
